Stanley Furniture has been in operation since 1942. Stanley Town, a former company town in Henry County, Virginia, United States, owes its existence to the company. Its creator, former governor of Virginia, Thomas Bahnson Stanley, founded the company after working in his father-in-law’s furniture store. Thomas Stanley was a dairy farmer who dreamed of owning his own company. From the tradition started by his father-in-law, he and his craftsmen passed on the quality craftsmanship and pride to each successive generation.
Today, more than 2,600 of these passionate craftspeople continue the company’s mission to quality furniture and service. The company’s strategy is to be the complete wood resource in the quality residential furniture market. Their commitment to offer high-quality, high-style furniture includes distribution through partnerships with reputable and reliable retailers.
Quality furniture starts with quality materials. Stanley associates handcraft every piece from high quality woods. The finest hard and soft woods are air dried for three to six months and placed in a dry kiln for two to eight weeks. This ensures a moisture content of 6 to 8 percent essential for stability in both desert and humid climates. Great care is taken in the construction of all pieces to ensure greater stability. All joints are held by glue and nail.
Because of the company’s long-standing commitment to the environment, their Martinsville plant received membership to the Environmental Protection Agency's prestigious National Environmental Performance Track program. Stanley is the first in the furniture industry to receive this award.
Quality, integrity and heritage characterize both the company's attitude and their furniture lines. The company has a long history of family values and community service. Stanley placed community before profit when they promised no layoffs during the Great Depression. When many Stanley Town residents could not make rent during this time, it was waived until they could pay. Stanley employees worked together to keep the company afloat and their hard work paid off. The company survived the Great Depression, and remains committed to community service.
With this in mind, Stanley Furniture only offers its products through trusted independent retail, to maintain the feeling of community and locality for customers during the furniture buying experience. This allows the passion and specialist furniture knowledge of the retailer to shine through. The ability to provide a tailored furniture solution keeps everything on a more personal level for customers. The convenience of a local delivery network and a more immediate point of contact for customer service and aftercare ensure customer satisfaction.
The experience doesn’t stop there, however. Caring for a product made to the highest standards, by craftspeople dedicated to providing a product which can last for generations, is also at the forefront of Stanley Furniture’s overall commitment to satisfaction. As well as placing their trust in the knowledge and experience of the retailers who offer their products, Stanley also offers advice and guidance on its own website for customers with regard to maintaining its products and ensuring that each masterfully created piece will last a lifetime, and more.
